It’s not about being a bad mom, it’s about being a Sh*tty Mom

Shtty Mom book coverThere is a new parenting book in town. Yes. Another one. But this one is different. For once, it is not going to drive you nuts with different approaches to make you child eat, sleep, sh*t, play, behave, and is not either going to make you feel like a bad mother and help you guilty load get even bigger (is that possible?)

No. Because this book is the SH*TTY MOM book. It actually “celebrates the less-than-perfect parenting moments” that we all have and we usually hide to avoid embarrassment. Because, let’s face it, who talks about the mistakes and the unsuccessful stories of parenting? If you talk, is to brag about your child, not to tell your judgemental mummy friends about how you have failed as a parent because your child is not ____ (insert any of these: eating healthy, sleeping through the night, sharing, behaving correctly etc etc etc)

Am I getting carried away?

“This book is about how to survive babies, and what they grow into: children. It’s about shortcuts and parenting with 40% effort, but doing it well enough so that no one but you notices. This book is a both a How To, and a How Not To.

You’ll learn how to ignore, avoid, threaten, and lie in easy-to-skim-while-locked-in the-bathroom chapters to help you make it through those days when there simply isn’t enough sh*tty advice in the world.

We all would feel much better if we all agreed that we are all in fact shtty mums at times. So, as an example to follow (please, don’t leave me on my own here ) I will confess my shtty mum moments:

  1. Once, I didn’t strap my baby in the buggy while we were at a little green field having a picnic. The field was a little hill. My son was probably under 1 year old, I’m not sure. He jumped off the buggy and landed on the grass. My partner likes to keep the moment alive in memory by telling everyone who wants to listen how his son rolled down the hill. He DID NOT. He was completely unharmed
  2. Another time, my son as a baby was left lying on the sofa while I went to get wipes or something. He had only started to learn how to roll, so I was still thinking about static babies and not dynamic. You guessed. He rolled and fell. Lucky we had a thick carpet.

Those are the bigger ones, but I can add: I have started letting him using the PC to play kids games on weekend mornings so I can catch up on a bit more sleep. Oh the shame :(

What is your Shitty mom moment? C’mon, we wont judge!
